The Woods by Jan Jesper Halle (Norway), translated by Nicholas W Morris; directed by Ben Kidd

Julie Nilsen has warts and nobody wantsto play with her. But one day she has sweets for everybody. Who is giving themto her and why? This beautifully imagined drama about the tragic disappearance of a ten-year-old girl is seen and told through the eyes of the very young.

The Woods won first prize in the Wilhelm Hansen Nordic Playwriting Competition in 2001.

Isberg, by Pascal Brullemans (Canada), translated by Maureen LaBonte; directed by Brenda Murphy

Plunged into unknown territory by the sudden death of their parents, three siblings are cast adrift from all that is familiar. Bound together by tragedy, they choose to live in a junk-filled basement rather than join their new ‘other’ family in the flat above.

Can they survive down here without tearing each other apart? Is there enough space for each of them to come to terms with the situation and to find who they are now?

Lighting Design by: Mark Dymock

Programme 2:

Sandholm by Anna Bro (Denmark), translated by Mia Theil Have and Max Webster; directed by Gareth Nicholls.

A young woman calling herself Job arrives at the gates of Sandholm, an asylum centre near Copenhagen. She won’t say where she is from, but claims to beable to speak to God. Soon people start turning to Job for salvation. But then Job’s past catches up with her…  Witty, moving and intensely thought-provoking, the play was inspired by the author’s stay at and interviews with residents at Sandholm.
