WHO THEY ARE...
Oystein Brager - director Together with Philip Thorne, Øystein founded the performance collective Imploding Fictions, one of the winners of the Young Angels Theatremakers Award (2007/08). Oystein also directed Sense ('Nose') by Anja Hilling for Company of Angels at Southwark Playhouse (2009) and New Norwegian Play Readings at the Arcola Theatre for Company of Angels and ATC (2008).
Øystein is joint artistic director of
Imploding Fictions and also works as a freelance director. In Norway he runs
Oslo International Theatre (OIT), a major Imploding Fictions project producing
rehearsed readings of contemporary international plays. Directing credits with
Imploding Fictions include Hamletmachine, Norway.Today, Flap and Fear
and You are Invited. Directing credits outside of Imploding Fictions and
OIT include Sense (Nose) by Anja Hilling for Company of Angels
(Southwark Playhouse, London), New Norwegian Play Readings for ATC
(Arcola Theatre, London), Plass (Dramatikkens Hus) and The Hitch
(site specific theatre performance, Oslo). Øystein also works as a translator
and dramaturg, and occationally writes plays and short stories.
Øystein’s short play The Perfect Girl
was performed at the Off Cut Festival at the Old Red Lion in London 2009, and
the short play (Don’t make) a scene was performed at the Lost Theatre in
London the same year. The Hitch, written by Oystein in collaboration
with Marie Ulsberg, received an award in the Norwegian Theatre Council’s
Playwriting Competition 2004.
Øystein trained as a theatre director at
Rose Bruford College. He is also an experienced workshop leader. He has been an
associate artist of Company of Angels since 2008, directs radio plays for
Bunbury Banter Theatre Company and works regularly as a mentor for the Norwegian
arts organisation Trafo.no. Since January 2011 Øystein has been working as an
Artistic Consultant at the Norwegian Actors Centre.
Ben Kidd - director Ben is the winner of the Young Angels Award 2010 and will be directing the winning play, 'Anne and Zef' by Ad de Bont in a Company of Angels, The Junction and Salisbury Playhouse production in early 2012. He has recently directed The Woods by Jesper Halle as part of the Young Angels New Writing season 2011 at Drama Centre London. Ben Kidd trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.Directing includes Richard III (Riverside Studios and UK Tour), Apart From George, Wisdom, Swamplands (Finborough Theatre). Assistant Directing includes Elektra (YoungVic), Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare'sGlobe) and I Am Falling (The Gate).
Brenda Murphy - director Brenda first worked with Company of Angels on Theatre Cafe Festival (2008), and directed Iphigenia by Pauline Mol for the New European Writing season at ALRA (2010). Recently Brenda has directed Isberg by Pascal Brullemans for the New Writing Season at Drama Centre London in spring 2011.
Brenda is Co-Artistic Director of Frozen Charlotte Productions; directing ‘Sense’by Anja Hilling at the Imaginate Festival 2010; co-directing 'Pink'commissioned by and presented at macrobert'smFEST and working as dramaturge on ‘Moussa’s Castle’, ‘Peep’ and 'Paperbelle'.
She has worked for a number of companies (including Theatre Centre, Heart n’Soul, Visible Fictions and National Theatre of Scotland) in a participatory andcommunity context; directing large-scale community projects, new-writing educationprogrammes, youth theatre and short films.
Jens Peters - director / dramaturge Jens first worked with Company of Angels on the Young Angels - New Writing programme (2009) directing Myrad - Boy from Bosnia at ALRA. He subsequently directed Dea Loher's Tattoo at Tristan Bates Theatre for the Young Angels - New Writing programme with Drama Centre London (2010).
Jens has workedas Assistant Director in Heidelberg, Bielefeld, Lyon and London.He holds an MA in Text & Performance Studies from RADA and Kings CollegeLondon and is currently researching New German Writing at the University of Exeterfor his PhD. He has beenTeaching Assistant for Directing and Dramaturgy at RADA, and is Assistant tothe International Associate at the Soho Theatre. Directing credits include: TheWaves (RADA and Drill Hall), ThisChild (Southwark Playhouse;Assistant Director), What Shaz Said (Southwark Playhouse), The Masculine Law (TARA Arts, SOAS, AmnestyInternational; co-director), Madness in Gray (Chelsea Arts Club and InTransitFestival). In 2010, he willbe directing a range of internationalshort plays, including Juliet's Balcony and Knock-knock by Niki Orfanou and TheWaiting Room by Allison Smith in London, Exeter and Cambridge. He has recently translated texts by Elfriede Jelinek and Roland Schimmelpfennig Zoe Svendsen - director/ translator Zoë has translated a number of plays for Company of Angels Theatre Cafe seasons,including Peter Turrini’s I Love This Country,Lutz Hübner’s Respect HolgerSchober's Clyde and Bonnie, as well as actingas interpreter and panellist at post-show discussions and play scout /ambassador for the company at a range of festivals in Germany.Directingprojects include Discombobulator (Venice Biennale Contemporary MusicFestival 2009; Dance Umbrella 2010); Brecht’s FourMen and a Poker Game (NorthernStage, the Tron; developed by Grid Iron and the NT studio) and 3rd Ring Out (TippingPoint Award; UK tour). Zoe is currently Research Fellow inDrama and Performance in the English Faculty at the University of Cambridge.
Mia Theil Have - choreographer / director Mia is a Danish actor and movement director and has worked with Company of Angels during the Young Angels - New Writing for Children programme 2008, at Theatre Cafe Festival and is currently developing The Boy Who Lived in the Trees, a Company of Angels and Unicorn Theatre co-production for 2012.
Mia trained at and was part of the ensemble at Odin Teatret (2003-7) in Denmark and atISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology). She has toured extensivelyin Asia, South America, Africa and Europe,teaching actor’s training and directing a wide range of performances fromstreet theatre and cultural barters to new interpretations of classical texts.She is currently based in Londonwhere she has worked at the Royal Opera House and with ROH2, The Young Vic, Unicorn,Theatre 503, Southwark Playhouse,Soho Studio as well as being an associate and choreographer for Company of Angels. Recent internationalwork as a director includes Lorca’s Bodas de Sangre (2009) at 13th HavanaInternational Theatre Festival in Cuba,Feast Kakhulu (2008) and Carnival under the Rainbow (2009), both for HiltonArts Festival in South Africaand Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle (2010) with Aarohan Theatre in Nepal.www.riotouscompany.com
Philip Thorne - director Philip is joint artistic director of Imploding Fictions. For Company of Angels he directed Norway, Today after winning the Young Angels Theatremakers Award in 2007/08. Philip is also a dramaturg to Oslo International Theatre.

Frascati (Amsterdam), Théâtre la Vignette (Montpellier), TJP (Strasbourg), Norway.

Fear, Theater Drachengasse (Vienna), Vardeteatret (Oslo) and You are
invited, Anywhere Theatre Festival (Brisbane).
Plays co-directed for Oslo
International Theatre include Seven Jewish Children, Seven Other Children,
Porcelain, Monsters, Medealand and The Truth will Out. Philip has
worked as assistant director in London at the National Theatre, Royal Court and
Almeida Theatre working with directors such as Ramin Gray and James Macdonald.
Philip is also a translator of plays from German into English and has
translated plays by Darja Stocker, Anne Rabe, Anja Hilling, Ewald Palmetshofer
and others for the Arcola, Royal Court and Soho Theatre. Philip’s translation
of Nightblind has been published by Oberon Books. Philip currently lives
in Paris.
Max Webster - director Max is a freelance director and has worked with Company of Angels during the Young Angels - New Writing for Children programme 2008, at Theatre Cafe Festival 2008, and has directed Sense at Southwark Playhouse and Mustard at Soho Theatre Studio.
Max trained at the Lecoq Theatre
School and as an
assistant to Eugenio Barba (Odin Teatret) and Simon McBurney (Complicite). Directing in London includes Anna Karenina (Arcola
Theatre), Prospero & Ariel (NT Studio, workshop), Finisterre (Theatre503), 10PM (Riverside Studios). His international work includes The Chalk Circle (Aarohan Theatre, Nepal & NSD Festival, Delhi),
Carnival Under The Rainbow and Feast Kakhulu (Hilton Festival, South Africa), Longing For Darkness (Havana
International Festival, Cuba)
and El Mono (El Cooperaction, Buenos
Aires). He has also directed at Drama Centre,
Birmingham School of Acting and ALRA.
Max is the recipient of the 2011 ITV
Regional Directors Bursary, to be resident at the Royal Exchange, Manchester.
Gareth Nicholls - director Gareth is a theatre director based in Glasgow who makes work with a sense of play, innovation and investigation at its heart across a range contexts. For Company of Angels Gareths work includes Sandholm at ALRA (2011).
His directing work includes Pause With A Smile (Arches/Traverse), Do a dance no-one can see you do and put it in a little bag (National Theatre of Scotland), Starting From Now (Strathilsa distillery), The Chrysalids (Lyceum Theatre) and Violent Night (Arches). As Associate director he has worked on Real Men Dream In Black And White (Eastwood Park theatre) and Crunch (UK Tour 2011/12).
As assistant director he has worked with Mark Thomson (Royal Lyceum) Pol Heyveart (Campo, Belgium), Graham McLaren, Simon Sharkey (National Theatre of Scotland), Richard Gregory (Quarrantine), Andy Arnold (Tron Theatre) and Graham Eatough (Suspect Culture).
Currently Gareth is Imaginate artist in residence creating several new pieces of work for teenage audiences including Educating Ronnie (due to open summer 2012) and Dede the Treeman (due to open autumn 2012).
Awards include Arches New Directors Award (2011), National Theatre of Scotland Emerging Artist (2008) and The Bruce Millar Award (2006).
